On this day in 1910 rugby league coach, commentator and TV presenter ‘Eddie’ Waring, MBE was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Waring was ever noted as a rugby league player, Eddie was actually better at football and trialed with Nottingham Forest and Barnsley. .His eccentric speech and broad northern accent were widely impersonated, and university students even formed the Eddie Waring Society in his honour. Many of his lines became catchphrases in the game, including ‘It’s an up and under’ and ‘He’s goin’ for an early bath’.Waring appeared as a presenter on TV’s Its’s a Knockout, and Jeux Sans Frontieres,  he also made guest appearances in such TV programmes, as The Morecambe and Wise Show and The Goodies. After his retirement he was diagnosed with dementia and his health declined quickly. He died in High Royds Hospital, West Yorkshire in 1986.
