On this day in 1889 English cricketer Ernest Tyldsley was born in Worsley. The younger brother of Johnny Tyldesley, he was Lancashire CCC’s leading batsman, and remains the County’s most prolific run-getter of all time.  He scored his first century against Sussex in 1912, but it was not until 1913, when he was firmly established in the team, that he reached 1,000 runs for the first time. Tyldesley played in 14 Tests, including the 1928-1929 Ashes Tour, amassing 990 runs at an average of 55, his highest score being 138. He scored 38,874 runs in first-class cricket, including 102 centuries, his highest score being 295 not out. He died in 1962 aged 73.
